At Uplift People of Elk Grove we help individuals and families break the cycle of poverty and move to a place of more abundant lives. We use a holistic approach that focuses on avoiding homelessness, moving off public assistance, planning for the future, goal setting and moving from a place of surviving to thriving.
Our mission is to provide a framework that allows individuals and families the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and move to a place of more abundant lives. Uplift People of Elk Grove uses a comprehensive and holistic approach which focuses on avoiding homelessness, continuing education, financial management, securing employment, self evaluation and moving off public assistance. We bridge the cultural and socioeconomic class lines that often divide us. Uplift is built on the philosophy that all participants will gain greatly from their experience and that we all benefit from the support and encouragement of others. We work to challenge preconceived beliefs about poverty.
Weekly meetings are the core of Uplift. Our weekly meetings include dinner, fellowship, educational curriculum, goal setting, presentations and workshops. We provide childcare and junior/high school programs. We recognize that transition from surviving to thriving takes time. Participants are asked to dedicate 24-36 months to complete the program.
Participants in Uplift are called Champions for Change. They are those who want to move towards greater well-being. They build intentional relationships across class and cultural lines.
Champions attend weekly meetings to develop a personal life plan. They identify barriers which limit success and assess strengths and resources needed to achieve their goals. They receive tools, education and a support network. Champions then use their newly acquired skills to make a positive impact in their community.
Allies are different from mentors or coaches. They go through the curriculum and then partner with Champions to help them achieve personal goals. Training and ongoing support is provided for Allies as they walk with their Champions through the program. Although Allies are there to support Champions, everyone benefits from building relationships.
